First off, great blog! Great information with great news everyday. Now to the subject of this e-mail. I totally disagree with the superintendent getting rid of the School Police Department. Herein lies the problem.
The chief of police got approval from former school board members to hire way too many police officers in this district. It started as grants from the state with the understanding the school district would take over their salaries in two to three years.
Well guess what, that time has arrived! I understand that this district is one of, or if not, the largest in South Texas, however five police officers and three security officers at each of the high schools is absolutely ridiculous. The district is spending too much money on the Police Department.
Check out other large school districts in South Texas and you will find way fewer police and security officers at each school.
Again, what this superintendent should do is cut personnel at the PD, not make them extinct all together. Here is a tip, leave one police officer at each middle school and one police officer at each high school.
Three security officers can stay at each of the secondary schools and continue to do their jobs. (Security Officers get paid way less than the police officers). Let the police officers take tests to determine if they stay with the school district.
This will cut the budget for the department and allow patrol to continue protecting our children.
NOTE: The chief did away with graveyard and weekend dispatchers. So, who protects our patrolman who protect our kids and school property. A cheap cell phone?

Your number 1 goal is to protect the students. Remember, I have kids attending ECISD and I'll be damned if we take the attitude let something happen first before we do anything. So call your president Carmen Gonzalez and tell her to do something now.
You know for a person that is up next year. She sure is not helping her cause. Maybe she just doesn't care.
