The Monitor Keeps Quiet Cause the Editor's Wife Works For UTPA

It takes The San Antonio Express to have some news on our president at UTPA Bambi Cardenas. The news is about criminal activity at UTPA. Leave The Monitor to stay quiet cause a certain person works for UTPA and her husband works for The Monitor.

Officials at the University of Texas System are looking into business practices at the University of Texas Pan-American in Edinburg after an anonymous tipster charged President Blandina "Bambi" Cárdenas with improperly using university resources for home improvements.

In a statement released Wednesday, UT System spokesman Anthony de Bruyn said UT-Pan Am officials are cooperating fully with the review, and that the results would be presented to the UT System Board of Regents at a future date.

Cárdenas didn't return a call for comment late Wednesday afternoon.

Scrutiny of university presidents heightened after Priscilla Slade, former president of Texas Southern University in Houston, was indicted last August for illegally using about $300,000 in university money, some to lavishly landscape and decorate her private home. Last month, the school's former chief financial officer, Quintin Wiggins, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for his role in the scandal. Slade's trial is scheduled for August.

In response to the Slade case, the UT System conducted audits at all its campuses last year to make sure business practices were on the up-and-up.

In two UT-Pan Am audits, conducted around April and November of last year, officials found several instances where Cárdenas didn't follow procedure when using university landscaping services, vehicle, credit cards, and cell phone, and when submitting receipts for drinks and meals while traveling.

Because of the accounting mistakes, Cárdenas owed the university about $200, which she paid.

Cárdenas' contract allows some use of university landscaping services when hosting university events at her home, but to avoid future problems Cárdenas outsourced those services, according to the audits. She also parked the university vehicle and began driving her own car, and outsourced home security services, which she had been paying the university to perform.
