One Of The Craddick D's Set To Retire

Puente, a key lieutenant to Republic Speaker Tom Craddick for the past three sessions and leader of the Bexar County delegation in the House, is expected to announce his retirement at a news conference on Saturday.

Three sessions ago Puente angered members of the Rio Grande Valley delegation by voting against increased funding for the Regional Academic Health Center. Asked why, Puente said he was sick and tired of the Valley getting San Antonio’s money. The RAHC is administered by the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.

Asked if his decision to quit was influenced by growing anger among grassroots Democrats over Craddick's leadership of the House, Puente told the Quorum Report: "I have over $300,000 in the bank along with an impeccable voting record on the issues important to my district. I have already done four events in the district in October and have been warmly received. Let people think what they will."
