Veronica Gonzales Will Not Endorse Republican Aaron Pena

AUSTIN, September 25 - As 13th Court of Appeals Justice Linda Yañez pointed out in a telephone call to the Guardian Tuesday, judges cannot endorse candidates.

The subject came up because the Guardian ran a file photo on the home page Tuesday showing a group of women candidates from Hidalgo County, including Sandra Rodriguez, who is running for Texas House District 36. In the caption below was a link to a story about Rodriguez’s race.

We should have pointed out that the photo on the home page was a file photo, taken at a meeting of the Hidalgo County Chapter of Texas Democratic Women last month. The women were grouped together because they were the candidates who attended the meeting. The photo was not taken at a fundraiser or reception for Rodriguez.

The Guardian wishes to point out that the four judicial candidates in the photo – Yañez, Maxine Longoria-Nash, Letty Lopez, and Dori Contreras-Garza – were not endorsing Rodriguez. As judges they are forbidden from endorsing.

The other woman in the photo, state Rep. Veronica Gonzales, D-McAllen, tells the Guardian she does not make endorsements in other House races.

The Guardian strives to provide 100 percent accuracy in its coverage of border news and is pleased to clear up any confusion caused by the photo.
