As Peña was walking to the podium to deliver his speech, El Paso’s Moreno murmured “sell out” to those in earshot. Asked afterwards why he said that, Moreno said Peña was.
“I had the opportunity to meet Peña the first day he was running for State Democratic chair. And he told me what a great Chicano he was,” Moreno explained. “I guess he’s lied to me and he’s lied to himself and he’s lied to the people, lied to the poor folks.”
Asked if he thought Craddick would be more inclusive, more understanding of members who want to vote their districts, Moreno told the Guardian: “Hell, why should he change? He has all the power. Can you imagine a Democrat running against him in Midland? It’s terrible.”
Craddick Finds An Opponent For Paul Moreno
Marisa Marquez (D-El Paso) has announced she will challenge Rep. Paul Moreno, the state’s senior Hispanic Democrat and the “conscience” of the Texas House.
Moreno said he thought House Speaker Tom Craddick and his allies in El Paso recruited Marquez to run against him. Moreno has been an outspoken Craddick critic.
